At the margins of the 3rd Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment (INC-3), 13 to 19 November 2023, a virtual side event will be held on “The Role of Judges in Addressing Plastic Pollution”, organised by the Global Judicial Institute on the Environment (GJIE) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in cooperation with the International Union for Conservation of Nature World Commission on Environmental Law (IUCN WCEL), the International Council of Environmental Law (ICEL) and the International Association of Judges (IAJ).
This high-level virtual dialogue among justices, senior judges and experts from around world will aim to discuss plastic pollution, through an environmental rule of law lens, and highlight the positive impact of the engagement of the judiciary in the drafting of a major multilateral environmental agreement from its inception, as it is the first time that this happens.
The event will take place on 8 November 2023, 08:00-11:00 BRT / 12:00-15:00 CET / 14:00-17:00 EAT / 18:00-21:00 ICT.
